Holy Trinity E-Newsletter V3 #10 3/15/17

Welcome to Volume 3 Number 10 of this E-Newsletter.

Grace, Mercy and Peace from our Risen Savior.

From the file of "this text interested me but I won't have time to preach on it Sunday"

How do you tell the story of your family history?  I am sure it's a story of love and lost, work and play, family growing, loving and coming together.  Those same stories are woven into the history of the Israelite people in the Hebrew Scripture.  However, there is also a lot of stories of them complaining.

In our reading for Sunday from Exodus, the Israelite's are making their way through the desert and they won't stop complaining.  They are complaining to the point of Moses looking to the sky and asking God what to do about their constant nagging.  God commands Moses to strike a rock and water flows from it for the people.  Then at the end of the text we get this question...is the Lord with us or not?

Isn't that the question people of faith has been asking for centuries...is the Lord with us or not?  The Israelites wandering in the desert had water coming from a rock and we today have our ways of being reminded that the Lord is with us.

The Holy Spirit reminds us of the Lord's presence in amazing ways each day and it is for us to keep our eyes, ears and senses attune to the ways it is working.  It maybe the work of community in standing up for justice for all people, it maybe a piece of scripture you might not have heard before or a line from a song that grabs you, it might be in the continued work for clean water for Flint, drinkable water in coal country, or to bring freshwater to developing countries and communities.

is the Lord with us or not?

**I am always interested in discussing issues and current events with anyone so please feel free to contact me for conversation.

Spring Cleaning! Mark your calendars for April 8th for our spring cleaning!  We will be coming together with the folks at Puddletown on their pride day as we work around the building, share in community and get our hands dirty.  We will be providing a few snack for the community that day, plan on joining us around 9am.

Winter Clothes Needed- Warm jackets, hats, gloves, sports bras, thick socks, and scarves are needed for people who are part of the Re-entry program at the Clark County Jail. You can help show Gods merciful love to hurting people who are being released from jail often to the streets to be homeless.  Be part of a success story.  Your donation will give a person warmth, safety, hope, and dignity as they try and rebuild their lives. Donations can be brought to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.  Let's help people start their journey with a gift from the Lord.

Prayer List- We have thinned out our prayer list but do not mean to take people off that still need to be on the list, so please let the church off know if we took anyone off in haste.

Acoustic Worship- On March 19th we are going to be trying something new in worship here at Holy Trinity.  We are going to be worshiping in a few fashion.  Wendell and Pastor Andrew have been working on an acoustic and more contemporary worship lead by Wendell on the piano and Pastor Andrew on guitar.  Be sure to join us and invite a friend for worship on the 19th.

Seeds of an Eco-Reformation- The Oregon Synod has received some grant money for congregations to do work around ecology and stewardship of creation work.  If you are interested in a project like this please talk with Pastor Andrew

Our Sunday School is officially back and off to a great start!  One Sunday a month we will have an extra focus on Christian Education.  Our Church in Action Children's Program will be integrated with our Sunday Worship.  New dates are being scheduled for 2017.

If you would like a printed version of our weekend newsletter they can be found on the bulletin board by the bathrooms at church.

There are some Lutheran community organizers looking to get to know SE Portland and do some work around concerns in the community.  If you are interested in the future of our corner of Portland and want to chat with them they would love to hear about your passions and desires for Portland.  Let Andrew know if you are interested in chatting with them.

We have been invited on the second Friday of every month to join for worship with the saints at Our Lady of Sorrows Church here in Woodstock.  At 7pm on those Fridays they gather for a Taize Service.  Taize is an ecumenical community in France that has developed a method of prayer that combines music, prayer and silence.  It is a beautiful service and something that cannot be related in words but needs to be experienced.  If you are looking for a new worship opportunity you should check it out.

Holy Trinity's Little Library- Thanks to Keith our Little Library is now complete and up on the fence!  It is located on Ogden Street right off of 39th.  So if you need a book or have a few to donate swing on by.
