Holy Trinity E-Newsletter 5/20 V 19

Grace, Mercy and Peace to you, Welcome to Volume 19 of this E-Newsletter.

This coming Sunday is Pentecost and that is one of the high points of the church year. It is on this day, 50 days after Easter, that the church celebrates the arrival of the Holy Spirit. It is on this day that the disciples of Jesus received that gift of the Holy Spirit, in those tongues of fire that descended upon them. This was the moment of revelation for those waiting after Jesus ascension. This was the moment where their mission to the world became clearer.

The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples and appear as tongues of fire over their heads. This was not just a cool trick but in this moment they were gifted with the abilities to speak many languages and took to the streets to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. Think of this as the reverse of the Tower of Babel. Language was not scattered at this point but language was widened so that all could understand the Good News.

There are some that refer to this day as the birthday of the church, it is more like the baptism of the church. This is the day in which we receive all the gifts and blessings of the Holy Spirit. For the modern church it is a day of renewal but also a day to refocus us on the task at hand. That is to bring the Gospel to all people in all places. It reminds us of our calling as disciples and once again we return to following the guide of the Holy Spirit.

So on Sunday be sure to wear RED to celebrate and welcome our guest preacher Rev. Maggie Rourk to Holy Trinity.
